Massage and Yoga Benefits Fibromyalgia

An article posted yesterday in Massage Magazine discusses a new study that has found that massage and yoga both benefit fibromyalgia patients. The study found that fibromyalgia patients following this combined complementary health program showed significantly greater improvement in symptoms and functioning that those that followed standard care program, including medication and life coping skills. In fact, the complementary health group reported greater improvement in pain, fatigue and mood, as well as catastrophizing and acceptance.

As practitioners of holistic medicine, we work to help support the body's natural ability to heal itself. Time and time again, we see people with conditions that pain medications do not touch respond positively to holistic treatment. That is because we are treating the body as a whole, and encouraging and supporting it's own healing mechanisms, rather than suppressing them with heavy doses of pharmaceuticals. This article is another great example of this! Granted, there is definitely a time and place for medication. But when used too heavily with no improvement and lots of side effects, they can end up doing more harm than good and masking the true problem that was there to begin with. Holistic medicine on the other hand, has very few side effects and aims to treat the root cause of a problem rather than the symptoms alone.
