October is Breast Health Awareness Month!

October is Breast Health Awareness MonthUnless you've been too busy to notice all the pink surrounding you lately, you must have realized that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Everyone is participating ... yogurt tops are pink this month, even NFL players are wearing pink on their uniforms! Having had a grandmother and two dear friends of mine survive breast cancer, I've always always heartily supported the pink ribbon.

But this year, I'm thinking about things a little differently. This is after reading an article yesterday by Christiane Northrop on Huffington. She talks about the idea of having October be Breast HEALTH Awareness Month, rather than Breast Cancer Awareness month. That way we're putting the emphasis on health and prevention, rather than on the cancer.

The article goes on to discuss the difference between thermography, which uses images of heat and inflammation in the body to detect possible precancerous or cancerous cells, and mammography, which uses low dose x-ray to detect abnormalities. Thermography has been shown to detect chancer earlier than mammography, is more successful at testing younger and denser breasts. AND thermography is safe - even for pregnant women!

Give this article a read. And lets all push for the earliest detection possible. Thermography.
